Improved Earnings Required Before APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) Shares Find Their Feet

APA公司(納斯達克:APA)股票需改善盈利情況才能穩定

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may consider APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) as a highly attractive investment with its 3.2x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, APA has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as APA's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 91%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 318% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 27% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 10% each year, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that APA is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

The Bottom Line On APA's P/E

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of APA's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
