Anhui Conch Cement's (HKG:914) Earnings Trajectory Could Turn Positive as the Stock Pops 14% This Past Week
Over the last month the Anhui Conch Cement Company Limited (HKG:914) has been much stronger than before, rebounding by 49%. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. In fact, the share price is down 48%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the five years over which the share price declined, Anhui Conch Cement's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 25% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 12% compound annual share price fall. So the market may previously have expected a drop, or else it expects the situation will improve.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Anhui Conch Cement the TSR over the last 5 years was -29%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Anhui Conch Cement shareholders have received returns of 33% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 5% over the last five years. While 'turnarounds seldom turn' there are green shoots for Anhui Conch Cement. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Anhui Conch Cement is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
