In the last year, many The Williams Companies, Inc. (NYSE:WMB) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Williams Companies

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Senior VP & Chief Human Resource Officer, Debbie Pickle, sold US$2.2m worth of shares at a price of US$35.61 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$52.36, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 50% of Debbie Pickle's stake.

Does Williams Companies Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Williams Companies insiders own 0.4% of the company, currently worth about US$275m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
