Analysts Have Lowered Expectations For CDW Corporation (NASDAQ:CDW) After Its Latest Results

As you might know, CDW Corporation (NASDAQ:CDW) last week released its latest quarterly, and things did not turn out so great for shareholders. CDW missed analyst forecasts, with revenues of US$5.5b and statutory earnings per share (EPS) of US$2.34, falling short by 3.5% and 4.7% respectively. This is an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance in its report, look at what experts are forecasting for next year, and see if there has been any change to expectations for the business. We thought readers would find it interesting to see the analysts latest (statutory) post-earnings forecasts for next year.

NasdaqGS:CDW Earnings and Revenue Growth November 1st 2024

Following the latest results, CDW's eleven analysts are now forecasting revenues of US$21.5b in 2025. This would be a credible 3.3% improvement in revenue compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are predicted to rise 7.5% to US$8.95. In the lead-up to this report, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$22.7b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$9.53 in 2025. It's pretty clear that pessimism has reared its head after the latest results, leading to a weaker revenue outlook and a minor downgrade to earnings per share estimates.

It'll come as no surprise then, to learn that the analysts have cut their price target 10% to US$224. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. The most optimistic CDW analyst has a price target of US$250 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$190. Still, with such a tight range of estimates, it suggeststhe analysts have a pretty good idea of what they think the company is worth.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that CDW's revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2025 expected to display 2.6% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 4.6% over the past five years. Compare this against other companies (with analyst forecasts) in the industry, which are in aggregate expected to see revenue growth of 7.5% annually. So it's pretty clear that, while revenue growth is expected to slow down, the wider industry is also expected to grow faster than CDW.

The Bottom Line

The biggest concern is that the analysts reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds could lay ahead for CDW. On the negative side, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and forecasts imply they will perform worse than the wider industry. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of CDW's future valuation.

Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. We have estimates - from multiple CDW analysts - going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
