Shareholders Can Be Confident That Wayzim Technology's (SHSE:688211) Earnings Are High Quality
The subdued stock price reaction suggests that Wayzim Technology Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:688211) strong earnings didn't offer any surprises. We think that investors have missed some encouraging factors underlying the profit figures.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
To properly understand Wayzim Technology's profit results, we need to consider the CN¥18m expense attributed to unusual items. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. In the twelve months to September 2024, Wayzim Technology had a big unusual items expense. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Wayzim Technology received a tax benefit of CN¥14m. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. And given that it lost money last year, it seems possible that the benefit is evidence that it now expects to find value in its past tax losses. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On Wayzim Technology's Profit Performance
In the last year Wayzim Technology received a tax benefit, which boosted its profit in a way that might not be much more sustainable than turning prime farmland into gas fields. Having said that, it also had a unusual item reducing its profit. Considering the aforementioned, we think that Wayzim Technology's profits are probably a reasonable reflection of its underlying profitability; although we'd be confident in that conclusion if we saw a cleaner set of results.
