What Does Pinterest's Recent Performance Look Like?
There hasn't been much to differentiate Pinterest's and the industry's revenue growth lately. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this modest revenue performance will accelerate. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?
Pinterest's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 18%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 43% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 15% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 12% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Pinterest's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
