Those Who Invested in Xcel Energy (NASDAQ:XEL) a Year Ago Are up 20%

There's no doubt that investing in the stock market is a truly brilliant way to build wealth. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Xcel Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:XEL) share price is up 16% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 6.9% in the last three years.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Xcel Energy was able to grow EPS by 6.6% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 16% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Xcel Energy the TSR over the last 1 year was 20%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Xcel Energy shareholders gained a total return of 20% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 6% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Xcel Energy better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Xcel Energy (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
