Yunnan Energy New Material's (SZSE:002812) Earnings Have Declined Over Three Years, Contributing to Shareholders 85% Loss
It is doubtless a positive to see that the Yunnan Energy New Material Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002812) share price has gained some 53% in the last three months. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. To wit, the share price sky-dived 85% in that time. So it sure is nice to see a bit of an improvement. But the more important question is whether the underlying business can justify a higher price still. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, Yunnan Energy New Material's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 30% each year. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 47% annual reduction in the share price. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 7.6% in the last year, Yunnan Energy New Material shareholders lost 33%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.2% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Yunnan Energy New Material is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
