In the last year, many Credit Acceptance Corporation (NASDAQ:CACC) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Credit Acceptance

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Sales Officer, Daniel Ulatowski, sold US$942k worth of shares at a price of US$474 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$473. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Credit Acceptance Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Credit Acceptance. Specifically, insider Thomas Smith ditched US$541k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Does Credit Acceptance Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Credit Acceptance insiders own 14% of the company, currently worth about US$827m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Credit Acceptance Insiders?

An insider hasn't bought Credit Acceptance stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. To help with this, we've discovered 3 warning signs (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you ought to be aware of before buying any shares in Credit Acceptance.

Of course Credit Acceptance may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.
