Accenture Insiders Sell US$3.5m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Accenture Insiders Sell US$3.5m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Over the past year, many Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Accenture
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Lead Director, Gilles Christian Pelisson, for US$2.2m worth of shares, at about US$308 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$359. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 39% of Gilles Christian Pelisson's holding.

Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Accenture insiders own 0.07% of the company, worth about US$154m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Accenture Insiders?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Accenture shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Accenture insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink. Luckily, you can check this free report showing analyst forecasts for its future.
Of course Accenture may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.
