The 3.5% Return This Week Takes First Solar's (NASDAQ:FSLR) Shareholders Five-year Gains to 261%
It hasn't been the best quarter for First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 15% in that time. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 261% in that time. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.
Since the stock has added US$698m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the five years of share price growth, First Solar moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the First Solar share price is up 96% in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 40% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 25% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

First Solar shareholders gained a total return of 20% during the year. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 29% over five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand First Solar better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - First Solar has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
