Positive Signs As Multiple Insiders Buy Nissin Foods Stock
Positive Signs As Multiple Insiders Buy Nissin Foods Stock
It is usually uneventful when a single insider buys stock. However, When quite a few insiders buy shares, as it happened in Nissin Foods Company Limited's (HKG:1475) case, it's fantastic news for shareholders.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Nissin Foods
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman & CEO Kiyotaka Ando bought HK$770k worth of shares at a price of HK$4.95 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of HK$5.05 per share to be enticing. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. The good news for Nissin Foods share holders is that insiders were buying at near the current price.

Insider Ownership
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 1.9% of Nissin Foods shares, worth about HK$102m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Nissin Foods shares in the last quarter. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. It would be great to see more insider buying, but overall it seems like Nissin Foods insiders are reasonably well aligned (owning significant chunk of the company's shares) and optimistic for the future.
