And institutional investors endured the highest losses after the company's share price fell by 5.9% last week. The recent loss, which adds to a one-year loss of 3.5% for stockholders, may not sit well with this group of investors. As a result, if the downtrend continues, institutions may face pressures to sell Synopsys, which might have negative implications on individual investors.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Synopsys?
Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.
Synopsys already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. It is not uncommon to see a big share price drop if two large institutional investors try to sell out of a stock at the same time. So it is worth checking the past earnings trajectory of Synopsys, (below). Of course, keep in mind that there are other factors to consider, too.

Investors should note that institutions actually own more than half the company, so they can collectively wield significant power. Synopsys is not owned by hedge funds. The Vanguard Group, Inc. is currently the largest shareholder, with 9.3% of shares outstanding. In comparison, the second and third largest shareholders hold about 8.6% and 4.8% of the stock.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. Quite a few analysts cover the stock, so you could look into forecast growth quite easily.
Insider Ownership Of Synopsys
While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. The company management answer to the board and the latter should represent the interests of shareholders. Notably, sometimes top-level managers are on the board themselves.
Insider ownership is positive when it signals leadership are thinking like the true owners of the company. However, high insider ownership can also give immense power to a small group within the company. This can be negative in some circumstances.
Our most recent data indicates that insiders own less than 1% of Synopsys, Inc.. As it is a large company, we'd only expect insiders to own a small percentage of it. But it's worth noting that they own US$530m worth of shares. In this sort of situation, it can be more interesting to see if those insiders have been buying or selling.
General Public Ownership
With a 10% ownership, the general public, mostly comprising of individual investors, have some degree of sway over Synopsys. This size of ownership, while considerable, may not be enough to change company policy if the decision is not in sync with other large shareholders.
