When close to half the companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.7x, you may consider CorMedix Inc. (NASDAQ:CRMD) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 43.4x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
How Has CorMedix Performed Recently?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, CorMedix has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
Keen to find out how analysts think CorMedix's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.
How Is CorMedix's Revenue Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as CorMedix's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, we see the company's revenues grew exponentially. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has also set the world alight, thanks to the last 12 months of incredible growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 172% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 20% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why CorMedix's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Final Word
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of CorMedix's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for CorMedix that you should be aware of.
