Investors Three-year Losses Continue as Sinosteel New Materials (SZSE:002057) Dips a Further 6.4% This Week, Earnings Continue to Decline
It is a pleasure to report that the Sinosteel New Materials Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002057) is up 32% in the last quarter. It's not great that the stock is down over the last three years. But on the bright side, its return of -19%, is better than the market, which is down 14%.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Sinosteel New Materials saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 12% per year, over the last three years. In comparison the 7% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Sinosteel New Materials' TSR for the last 3 years was -13%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Sinosteel New Materials shareholders are up 1.6% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 0.5% endured over half a decade. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Sinosteel New Materials has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
