Telegram And WeChat Begin Licensing Process In Malaysia
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that Telegram and Tencent's WeChat are in the process of securing licences to operate their platforms in Malaysia.
馬來西亞通信和多媒體委員會(MCMC)宣佈Telegram和騰訊控股的微信正在辦理在馬來西亞運營其平台的許可證。
This move follows the introduction of licensing requirements, effective Jan 1, 2025, aimed at enhancing online safety, user protection, and regulatory oversight for internet messaging and social media platforms.

MCMC commended both platforms for their commitment to compliance and stated that they are expected to fulfil the necessary requirements soon.

MCMC has reminded all service providers to submit their applications before the Dec 31, 2024 deadline to avoid regulatory action. The commission is ready to assist service providers to ensure a seamless application process.
