The SOS Limited (NYSE:SOS) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 40%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 89% share price decline.
Since its price has dipped substantially, SOS may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Professional Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.
How Has SOS Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at SOS over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as SOS' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 49% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 51% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 7.5% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this in mind, we understand why SOS' P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Bottom Line On SOS' P/S
SOS' P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of SOS revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with SOS (at least 3 which are a bit unpleasant), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
