Recent 3.2% Pullback Isn't Enough to Hurt Long-term Hecla Mining (NYSE:HL) Shareholders, They're Still up 48% Over 5 Years
It hasn't been the best quarter for Hecla Mining Company (NYSE:HL) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 26% in that time. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. In that time, it is up 44%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 95%.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
We know that Hecla Mining has been profitable in the past. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. So we might find other metrics can better explain the share price movements.
We doubt the modest 1.1% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. We are not particularly impressed by the annual compound revenue growth of 2.6% over five years. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Hecla Mining the TSR over the last 5 years was 48%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Hecla Mining shareholders gained a total return of 5.5% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 8% over five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Hecla Mining that you should be aware of before investing here.
