BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has officially launched the Xia, its new model in the MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) market.

The Xia is a premium MPV model in BYD's Dynasty lineup and follows the Denza D9, another MPV in the BYD Group's portfolio.

The hybrid Xia MPV is equipped with BYD's latest DM 5.0 hybrid technology and comes standard with the DiPilot 100 driver assistance system.

BYD offers four variants of the Xia with starting prices of RMB 249,800 ($34,070), RMB 259,800, RMB 285,800 and RMB 309,800, respectively.

The three-row, seven-seat MPV measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width and 1,805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,045 mm.

These dimensions are smaller than those of the Denza D9, which measures 5,250 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,920 mm in length, width and height respectively, and has a wheelbase of 3,110 mm.

It comes standard with a 1.5 T engine with 115 kW of maximum power and 225 Nm of peak torque. It has an electric motor with 200 kW of maximum power and 315 Nm of peak torque.

Powered by this powertrain, the BYD Xia can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds.

The two lower-priced variants of the Xia are powered by a blade battery pack with a capacity of 20.39 kWh based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is capable of delivering a CLTC battery range of 100 kilometers.

The two pricier variants are powered by a blade battery pack with a capacity of 36.6 kWh, capable of delivering a CLTC battery range of 180 kilometers.

It comes standard with a fuel tank with a capacity of 50 L and has a CLTC range of up to 1,060 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.

The Xia is equipped with DiSus C body control system that senses the road surface in advance and actively adjusts suspension damping.

BYD released DiSus on April 10, 2023 with three branches including DiSus-C, DiSus-A and DiSus-P.

DiSus-C adjusts damping by controlling damper solenoids, and the system delivers a significant improvement in ride comfort over traditional passive suspensions.

The Xia comes standard with the DiPilot 100 driver assistance system and not equipped with any LiDARs.

The system enables the Xia to achieve pilot-assisted driving on highways and expressways, and has driver assistance features including park assist and emergency braking.

The MPV's cabin utilizes the DiLink 100 or DiLink 150 system and offers comfortable seats that can change modes.

Named after the first recorded dynasty of Chinese civilization, the Xia is a new family of BYD's Dynasty lineup. BYD's other major product array is the Ocean lineup.

On August 30, 2024, BYD gave the Xia its debut on the first day of the Chengdu auto show, saying at the time that the MPV would be priced in the RMB 300,000 level.

On September 27, BYD began accepting pre-orders for the Xia, but no pricing information was released at the time.

The MPV market is a niche market in China, with monthly sales about one-tenth those of sedans or SUVs (sport utility vehicles).

BYD had launched the M6 MPV in China in 2010 and the Song Max in 2017. Both models have now been discontinued in China.

The only MPV currently available in China under the BYD Group umbrella is the D9 from sub-brand Denza, an MPV that saw success.

The Denza D9 delivered 92,945 vehicles from January-November 2024, contributing to 83.75 percent of Denza's deliveries over the same period, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Denza delivered 15,059 vehicles in December; D9 delivery figures for last month are not yet available.
