If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the China XD Electric Co., Ltd (SHSE:601179) share price is up 30% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Over the last twelve months the stock price has risen a very respectable 5.1%.
So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, China XD Electric managed to grow its earnings per share at 5.9% a year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 5% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for China XD Electric the TSR over the last 5 years was 36%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that China XD Electric shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 6.0% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 6% a year, is even better. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
