Despite a 15% gain in Nabors Industries Ltd.'s (NYSE:NBR) stock price this week, shareholders shouldn't let up. Although prices were relatively low, insiders chose to sell US$623k worth of stock in the past 12 months. This could be a sign of impending weakness.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Nabors Industries

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, John Kotts, sold US$623k worth of shares at a price of US$125 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$87.42. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it. John Kotts was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Nabors Industries insiders own 5.7% of the company, worth about US$47m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Do The Nabors Industries Insider Transactions Indicate?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Nabors Industries insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. Therefore, you should definitely take a look at this FREE report showing analyst forecasts for Nabors Industries.
