龍星化工株式会社(SZSE:002442)の収益による株価下落が市場に影響を与える

Longxing Chemical Stock Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002442) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 11% share price drop.

Following the heavy fall in price, Longxing Chemical Stock's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.5x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 31x and even P/E's above 55x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Longxing Chemical Stock over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Longxing Chemical Stock?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Longxing Chemical Stock's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 7.2%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 581% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 42% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it odd that Longxing Chemical Stock is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Longxing Chemical Stock's P/E?

The softening of Longxing Chemical Stock's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Longxing Chemical Stock revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
