KraussMaffei Company Limited (SHSE:600579) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 28% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

KraussMaffei Company Limited(SHSE:600579)は28%下落した後に安く見えますが、十分に魅力的ではないかもしれません。

The KraussMaffei Company Limited (SHSE:600579) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 22% in that time.

After such a large drop in price, KraussMaffei may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Machinery industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 2.5x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does KraussMaffei's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Revenue has risen firmly for KraussMaffei recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for KraussMaffei, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, KraussMaffei would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 16% gain to the company's top line. As a result, it also grew revenue by 19% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 28% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why KraussMaffei is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in KraussMaffei have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of KraussMaffei confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
