The IFE Elevators Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002774) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 30%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 17% share price drop.

After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 28x, you may consider IFE Elevators as an attractive investment with its 16.5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

IFE Elevators certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is IFE Elevators' Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, IFE Elevators would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 95% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 417% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 41% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it odd that IFE Elevators is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On IFE Elevators' P/E

IFE Elevators' P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that IFE Elevators currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
