Viewing insider transactions for Sonic Automotive, Inc.'s (NYSE:SAH ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net sellers. This means that a larger number of shares were sold by insiders in relation to shares purchased.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Sonic Automotive

The President & Director, Frank Dyke, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.7m worth of shares at a price of US$57.31 each. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$51.23). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it. Frank Dyke was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Does Sonic Automotive Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 4.1% of Sonic Automotive shares, worth about US$71m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Sonic Automotive Insiders?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Sonic Automotive shares in the last quarter. Still, the insider transactions at Sonic Automotive in the last 12 months are not very heartening. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
