Shanxi Meijin Energy Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:000723) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 10% in the last month. But in truth the last year hasn't been good for the share price. In fact, the price has declined 34% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

While the last year has been tough for Shanxi Meijin EnergyLtd shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unfortunately Shanxi Meijin EnergyLtd reported an EPS drop of 61% for the last year. The share price fall of 34% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have expected earnings to drop faster.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Shanxi Meijin EnergyLtd shareholders are down 34% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 16%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 3% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Shanxi Meijin EnergyLtd (1 is a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
