Even With A 37% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Skyworth Digital Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:000810) Performance Completely

Those holding Skyworth Digital Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000810) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 37% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 28% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 30x, you may still consider Skyworth Digital as an attractive investment with its 24.1x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Skyworth Digital has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Skyworth Digital?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Skyworth Digital would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 38%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 25% overall rise in EPS. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 77% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 41%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Skyworth Digital's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On Skyworth Digital's P/E

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Skyworth Digital's P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Skyworth Digital's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
