Jiayu Holding Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300117) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 43% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the last month did very little to improve the 52% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, it would still be understandable if you think Jiayu HoldingLtd is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.8x, considering almost half the companies in China's Building industry have P/S ratios above 1.8x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Jiayu HoldingLtd Has Been Performing

It looks like revenue growth has deserted Jiayu HoldingLtd recently, which is not something to boast about. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to worsen, which has repressed the P/S. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Jiayu HoldingLtd's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 28% decline in revenue over the last three years in total. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we are not surprised that Jiayu HoldingLtd is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From Jiayu HoldingLtd's P/S?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Jiayu HoldingLtd's P/S close to the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Jiayu HoldingLtd revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
