Aishida Co., Ltd (SZSE:002403) Stock Catapults 69% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

愛志達株式会社(SZSE:002403)株が69%急騰したが、その価格とビジネスはまだ業種に遅れている

Aishida Co., Ltd (SZSE:002403) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 69% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 2.8% isn't as attractive.

Even after such a large jump in price, considering around half the companies operating in China's Consumer Durables industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 2x, you may still consider Aishida as an solid investment opportunity with its 1.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Aishida Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Aishida over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. Those who are bullish on Aishida will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Aishida?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Aishida's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 23% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 15% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 12% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we understand why Aishida's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Key Takeaway

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Aishida's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of Aishida confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

You always need to take note of risks, for example - Aishida has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
