Some Confidence Is Lacking In Sportsoul Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:001300) As Shares Slide 26%

スポーツソウル株式会社(SZSE:001300)株価が26%下落し、自信に欠けるところがある

The Sportsoul Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:001300) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 15% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, when almost half of the companies in China's Leisure industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3x, you may still consider SportsoulLtd as a stock not worth researching with its 8.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does SportsoulLtd's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at SportsoulLtd over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on SportsoulLtd's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is SportsoulLtd's Revenue Growth Trending?

SportsoulLtd's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 55%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 65% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 22% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's alarming that SportsoulLtd's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Key Takeaway

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate SportsoulLtd's very lofty P/S. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that SportsoulLtd currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. When we see revenue heading backwards and underperforming the industry forecasts, we feel the possibility of the share price declining is very real, bringing the P/S back into the realm of reasonability. Should recent medium-term revenue trends persist, it would pose a significant risk to existing shareholders' investments and prospective investors will have a hard time accepting the current value of the stock.

Having said that, be aware SportsoulLtd is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.
