China Jinmao Holdings Group Limited (HKG:817) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 56% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, China Jinmao Holdings Group may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in Hong Kong have P/S ratios greater than 0.6x and even P/S higher than 3x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How China Jinmao Holdings Group Has Been Performing

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, China Jinmao Holdings Group's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think China Jinmao Holdings Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is China Jinmao Holdings Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, China Jinmao Holdings Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 13% decrease to the company's top line. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 21% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 0.6% per year over the next three years. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.5% per year.

With this information, we are not surprised that China Jinmao Holdings Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift China Jinmao Holdings Group's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It's clear to see that China Jinmao Holdings Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, China Jinmao Holdings Group's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
