Ideally, your overall portfolio should beat the market average. But every investor is virtually certain to have both over-performing and under-performing stocks. At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in China Lilang Limited (HKG:1234), since the last five years saw the share price fall 41%. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 8.6%.
Since China Lilang has shed HK$491m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Looking back five years, both China Lilang's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 6.7% per year. This reduction in EPS is less than the 10% annual reduction in the share price. This implies that the market was previously too optimistic about the stock. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 9.17.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
SEHK:1234 Earnings Per Share Growth May 22nd 2024
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of China Lilang, it has a TSR of -7.1% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that China Lilang shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 13% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 1.4% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand China Lilang better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for China Lilang you should know about.
