The One-year Shareholder Returns and Company Earnings Persist Lower as IDACORP (NYSE:IDA) Stock Falls a Further 4.8% in Past Week

The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. For example, the IDACORP, Inc. (NYSE:IDA) share price is down 11% in the last year. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 27%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 5.7% in that time.

With the stock having lost 4.8% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unhappily, IDACORP had to report a 5.9% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price decline of 11% is actually more than the EPS drop. Unsurprisingly, given the lack of EPS growth, the market seems to be more cautious about the stock.

You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, IDACORP's TSR for the last 1 year was -8.0%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

IDACORP shareholders are down 8.0% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 27%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 0.7%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand IDACORP better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - IDACORP has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
