Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Jiangsu Fasten Company Limited (SZSE:000890) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 36% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking Jiangsu Fasten is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.6x, considering almost half the companies in China's Metals and Mining industry have P/S ratios below 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Jiangsu Fasten's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Jiangsu Fasten over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Jiangsu Fasten's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Jiangsu Fasten's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 31%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 12% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 15% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Jiangsu Fasten's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

There's still some elevation in Jiangsu Fasten's P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of Jiangsu Fasten revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards and underperforming the industry forecasts, we feel the possibility of the share price declining is very real, bringing the P/S back into the realm of reasonability. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
