Genes Tech Group Holdings Company Limited's (HKG:8257) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 33%

靖洋グループホールディングス株式会社(HKG:8257)の価格は正しいですが、株式が33%急上昇しても成長が不十分です

The Genes Tech Group Holdings Company Limited (HKG:8257) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 33%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 47% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, when close to half the companies operating in Hong Kong's Semiconductor industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.5x, you may still consider Genes Tech Group Holdings as an enticing stock to check out with its 0.2x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Genes Tech Group Holdings Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Genes Tech Group Holdings over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Genes Tech Group Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 17%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 11% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that Genes Tech Group Holdings' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Final Word

Despite Genes Tech Group Holdings' share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

It's no surprise that Genes Tech Group Holdings maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
