Many Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Peabody Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive VP & COO, Darren Yeates, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$815k worth of shares at a price of US$25.48 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$23.65. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Insiders in Peabody Energy didn't buy any shares in the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership Of Peabody Energy

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Peabody Energy insiders own about US$11m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Peabody Energy Tell Us?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Peabody Energy shares in the last quarter. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Peabody Energy insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. Our analysis shows 2 warning signs for Peabody Energy (1 is a bit concerning!) and we strongly recommend you look at these before investing.
