BARK, Inc. (NYSE:BARK) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 37% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 8.0% isn't as attractive.
Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about BARK's P/S ratio of 0.6x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Specialty Retail industry in the United States is also close to 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
What Does BARK's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, BARK's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?
The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like BARK's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 8.4%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 29% overall rise in revenue. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 7.9% per year during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 5.7% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that BARK's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What Does BARK's P/S Mean For Investors?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now BARK's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, BARK's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
