Viewing insider transactions for QuinStreet, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:QNST ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net sellers. This means that a larger number of shares were sold by insiders in relation to shares purchased.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At QuinStreet

The Chief Financial Officer, Gregory Wong, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$425k worth of shares at a price of US$12.94 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$16.02. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 19% of Gregory Wong's holding. Gregory Wong was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Gregory Wong sold a total of 41.42k shares over the year at an average price of US$13.31. For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. QuinStreet insiders own about US$42m worth of shares. That equates to 4.7% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
