The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Gemdale Corporation's (SHSE:600383) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 29%

gemdale corporationの収益が思わしくなかったため、株価が29%下落したことを市場は好まなかった。

Gemdale Corporation (SHSE:600383) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 29% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 51% loss during that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, Gemdale may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Gemdale's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Gemdale's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Gemdale's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 25%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 8.4% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 20% as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 4.7%, which paints a poor picture.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Gemdale's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Final Word

Gemdale's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Gemdale's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Gemdale's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
