It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002534) share price down 11% in the last month. On the bright side the returns have been quite good over the last half decade. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 46% in that time. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 40% drop, in the last year.

Although Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing has shed CN¥798m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing managed to grow its earnings per share at 2.6% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 8% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing, it has a TSR of 62% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing shareholders are down 39% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 14%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 10%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing better, we need to consider many other factors.
