Over the past year, many Lakeland Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:LKFN) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Lakeland Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, Michael Kubacki, for US$1.9m worth of shares, at about US$71.51 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$61.52. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 14.67k shares worth US$769k. On the other hand they divested 65.59k shares, for US$4.4m. In total, Lakeland Financial insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Lakeland Financial Insiders Are Selling The Stock

We have seen a bit of insider selling at Lakeland Financial, over the last three months. Senior VP & Chief Human Resource Officer Kyra Clark only netted US$31k selling shares, in that period. Neither the lack of buying nor the presence of selling is heartening. But the amount sold isn't enough for us to put any weight on it.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Lakeland Financial insiders own 2.9% of the company, worth about US$44m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Lakeland Financial Insiders?

While there has not been any insider buying in the last three months, there has been selling. But the sales were small, so we're not concerned. Recent insider selling makes us a little nervous, in light of the broader picture of Lakeland Financial insider transactions. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
