Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002496) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 25% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 15% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for thinking Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 15x, considering almost half the companies in China's Chemicals industry have P/S ratios below 1.9x. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For example, consider that Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 15%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 88% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 22% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's alarming that Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What We Can Learn From Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture's P/S?

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture's very lofty P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Jiangsu Huifeng Bio Agriculture currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
