Looking at Silicon Laboratories Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SLAB ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Silicon Laboratories

The CEO, President & Director, Robert Johnson, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$398k worth of shares at a price of US$108 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$118. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was 100% of Robert Johnson's holding. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Robert Johnson.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Silicon Laboratories insiders own 1.9% of the company, worth about US$70m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
