Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:603466) Earnings Are Not Doing Enough For Some Investors

When close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 28x, you may consider Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603466) as an attractive investment with its 19.3x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Recent times have been advantageous for Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 84% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 51% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 18% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 25% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Shanghai Fengyuzhu Culture Technology maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
