Sight Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:SGHT) insiders who purchased shares in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The stock climbed by 21% resulting in a US$66m addition to the company's market value. In other words, the original US$2.99m purchase is now worth US$7.41m.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Sight Sciences Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Chairman Staffan Encrantz bought US$1.8m worth of shares at a price of US$3.46 per share. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of US$7.52. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Staffan Encrantz purchased 985.12k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$3.04. Sight Sciences Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at Sight Sciences. In total, insiders dumped US$290k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Insider Ownership Of Sight Sciences

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Sight Sciences insiders own 21% of the company, worth about US$66m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Sight Sciences Insiders?

Insiders sold Sight Sciences shares recently, but they didn't buy any. In contrast, they appear keener if you look at the last twelve months. And insiders do own shares. So we're not overly bothered by recent selling. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
