From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in National Fuel Gas Company's (NYSE:NFG ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At National Fuel Gas

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the General Counsel & Secretary, Michael Reville, sold US$349k worth of shares at a price of US$54.83 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$55.69). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 21% of Michael Reville's holding. Michael Reville was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Michael Reville divested 6.81k shares over the last 12 months at an average price of US$54.69. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
