In the last year, many Fortive Corporation (NYSE:FTV) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Fortive insiders own about US$86m worth of shares. That equates to 0.3% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
