Insiders were net buyers of OmniAb, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:OABI ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders bought more stock than they sold.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

OmniAb Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President Matthew Foehr made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$5.19 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$4.48. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Matthew Foehr was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Matthew Foehr bought 805.00k shares over the last 12 months at an average price of US$4.83. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. OmniAb insiders own about US$28m worth of shares. That equates to 5.4% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About OmniAb Insiders?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest OmniAb insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 1 warning sign with OmniAb and understanding it should be part of your investment process.

Of course OmniAb may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.
