Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, long term Yunnan Copper Co.,Ltd (SZSE:000878) shareholders have enjoyed a 18% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 2.2% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 14%, including dividends.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, Yunnan CopperLtd managed to grow its earnings per share at 43% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 3% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We know that Yunnan CopperLtd has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Yunnan CopperLtd the TSR over the last 5 years was 29%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Yunnan CopperLtd shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 14% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 5% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Yunnan CopperLtd better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Yunnan CopperLtd (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.

Of course Yunnan CopperLtd may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.
