By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Jiangxi Ganyue Expressway CO.,LTD. (SHSE:600269) share price is up 52% in the last three years, clearly besting the market decline of around 30% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 39% in the last year, including dividends.
Although Jiangxi Ganyue ExpresswayLTD has shed CN¥490m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Jiangxi Ganyue ExpresswayLTD was able to grow its EPS at 4.8% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is lower than the 15% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Jiangxi Ganyue ExpresswayLTD, it has a TSR of 62% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Jiangxi Ganyue ExpresswayLTD shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 39% over one year. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 6%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Jiangxi Ganyue ExpresswayLTD (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
